How to Unarchive a Story on Instagram (and Archive or Unarchive Posts)

Instagram keeps your old Stories and the posts you hide in a private archive. This guide explains what "unarchive" really means for a Story, the exact steps to share an archived Story again or pin it to a Highlight, and how to archive and restore posts without losing likes or comments.

How to Unarchive a Story on Instagram: Quick Answer

Stories do not have an "Unarchive" button, because an expired Story cannot go back to its original 24-hour slot. Instead, open your Stories Archive, tap the Story and choose what to do with it:

Share it again to your Story, where it runs for a new 24 hours. Add it to a Highlight so it stays on your profile permanently. Share it as a post, send it in a direct message, or save it to your phone.

Archived posts are different: open the post in your Posts archive, tap the three dots and choose Show on profile. It returns to your grid with all its likes and comments.

Good to know

Instagram moves menus around between app versions. If a label below looks slightly different in your app, update Instagram first; the options themselves have stayed the same for years.

What Does Archive Mean on Instagram?

The archive is a private storage area inside your Instagram account. Only you can see it. It holds three kinds of content:

Stories. When the Stories Archive setting is on, every Story you post is saved there automatically once its 24 hours are over. You do not have to do anything.

Posts and Reels you archive. Archiving a post hides it from your profile and feeds without deleting it. Likes, comments, the caption and the original date are kept.

Live videos. Where available, ended live broadcasts can also be kept in the archive for a limited time.

Archiving is the best option when you want something out of sight but might want it back later. Deleting removes it for good once the Recently deleted period ends.

Where to Find Your Instagram Archive

  1. Open your profile.

Tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner of the app.

  2. Open the menu.

Tap the three lines (☰) in the top-right corner.

  3. Go to your archive.

Tap Your activity and then Archived. On some app versions Archive appears directly in this menu instead.

  4. Pick the archive type.

Switch between the Stories, Posts and Live archives using the tabs or the drop-down at the top of the screen.

Stories are sorted by date, with the newest at the bottom. Instagram also shows a calendar or map view in some versions, which makes it easier to jump to a specific month.

How to Share an Archived Story Again

This is what most people mean by "unarchiving" a Story: putting it back in front of followers.

  1. Open your Stories Archive.

Follow the steps above and select the Stories archive.

  2. Tap the Story you want.

It opens full screen, just like when you first posted it.

  3. Tap Share.

Use the Share button at the bottom of the screen. You can also open the three dots to see options such as Share as post and Delete.

  4. Edit if you like.

You can add text, stickers or music before sharing. Instagram may add a small sticker with the original date; drag it to the trash icon if you do not want it.

  5. Choose Your story.

The Story goes live again as a new Story and disappears from the ring after 24 hours, then returns to your archive.

Followers see it as a fresh Story, so it appears in their Stories tray again. View counts start from zero, and the original viewer list is not carried over.

How to Add an Archived Story to a Highlight

Highlights are the circles under your bio. A Story in a Highlight stays visible on your profile until you remove it, which makes it the closest thing to a permanent "unarchive".

  1. Open the Story in your archive.

Tap the archived Story so it plays full screen.

  2. Tap Highlight.

Look for the Highlight button (a heart or circle icon) at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Choose a Highlight.

Add it to an existing Highlight or tap New, give it a name and confirm.

You can also start from your profile: tap the + (New) circle under your bio, pick several Stories from your archive at once, then choose a cover and a name. Removing a Story from a Highlight does not delete it; it simply stays in your archive.

How to Save an Archived Story to Your Phone

Open the Story in your Stories Archive, tap the three dots and choose Save photo or Save video. The file goes to your camera roll or gallery. This is a good way to keep a backup outside Instagram, because the archive only exists as long as your account does.

If you post a lot of Stories, you can also request a full copy of your data from Instagram in Accounts Center under Your information and permissions → Download your information.

How to Archive a Post on Instagram

  1. Open the post or Reel on your profile.

Archiving works for photos, videos, carousels and Reels you posted.

  2. Tap the three dots.

They are in the top-right corner of the post.

  3. Tap Archive.

The post disappears from your profile straight away. Nobody is notified.

To archive several posts at once, go to ☰ → Your activity → Photos and videos → Posts, tap Select, choose the posts and tap Archive. This is useful when you want to clean up your grid without deleting anything.

How to Unarchive a Post on Instagram

  1. Open your Posts archive.

Go to ☰ → Your activity → Archived and select the Posts tab.

  2. Open the post.

Tap the post you want to bring back.

  3. Tap the three dots, then Show on profile.

    The post is restored immediately.

An unarchived post goes back to its original place in your grid, based on the date it was first published. It does not jump to the top, and it keeps its likes, comments, caption, tags and location. Your followers are not notified, and the post does not appear in their feeds again as a new post.

If you want old content to reach people again, share it to your Story after restoring it, or post it as a new post.

How to Turn the Stories Archive On or Off

If the Stories Archive is off, expired Stories are not saved anywhere unless they are in a Highlight. Check the setting now so future Stories are kept:

  1. Open your archive.

Go to ☰ → Your activity → Archived, or ☰ → Archive on older versions.

  2. Open the archive settings.

Tap the three dots in the top-right corner and choose Settings. You can also find the same options in Settings and privacy under Archiving and downloading.

  3. Turn on Save story to archive.

While you are there, you can also turn on saving Stories to your phone automatically.

Tip

Turning the setting on only affects Stories you post from now on. It cannot recover Stories that expired while the archive was switched off.

Can't Find an Archived Story?

The Stories Archive was off. Stories that expired while it was off were not saved and cannot be recovered.

The Story was deleted. Look in ☰ → Your activity → Recently deleted. Deleted posts stay there for 30 days; a deleted Story that was not in your archive is kept for a much shorter time. Open the item, tap the three dots and choose Restore.

You are on a different account. If you manage several accounts, check that you are viewing the archive of the account that posted the Story.

Your app is out of date. Older versions can hide the Archive or Your activity menu. Update Instagram and restart the app.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you unarchive a story on Instagram?

Not to its original time slot. You can share an archived Story again as a new Story for 24 hours, add it to a Highlight so it stays on your profile, share it as a post, or save it to your phone.

Does anyone get notified when I unarchive a post?

No. Instagram does not notify followers when you archive or unarchive a post, and a restored post does not appear in feeds again as new.

Can other people see my Instagram archive?

No. Your archive is private and only visible to you. Stories become public again only if you share them or add them to a Highlight.

Does an unarchived post keep its likes and comments?

Yes. Archiving only hides a post, so its likes, comments, caption and original date are all kept when you choose Show on profile.

Where does an unarchived post appear on my profile?

It returns to its original position in your grid, based on its first publish date, rather than appearing at the top.

How long do Stories stay in the archive?

Archived Stories stay until you delete them, as long as the Stories Archive setting was on when they expired.

Can I archive or unarchive posts on a computer?

Archive management is designed for the Instagram app. Use the app on your phone to open the archive and restore posts.
