Instagram Story Size and Dimensions: The Complete 2026 Guide

A Story that fills the whole screen looks professional; one with black bars or cropped text does not. Here are the exact Instagram Story dimensions, the safe zones to keep text readable, how long Stories can be and the export settings that stop Instagram from making them blurry.

Instagram Story Size: Quick Answer

The best Instagram Story size is 1080 x 1920 pixels, an aspect ratio of 9:16. That is a full-screen vertical frame on almost every phone. Keep important text and logos away from the top and bottom of the frame, where Instagram places your profile name and the reply bar.

Video formatsMP4 or MOV
Video lengthUp to 60 seconds per Story
Photo durationAbout 5 seconds

Instagram Story Dimensions and Specifications

Resolution. 1080 x 1920 px is the standard. Larger files are scaled down to this size, and smaller images are scaled up, which can make them soft or pixelated.

Aspect ratio. 9:16 fills the screen. Other ratios still work, but Instagram adds a background or crops the edges (see below).

File types. Use JPG or PNG for photos and MP4 or MOV for video. For video, H.264 compression at 30 frames per second is the most reliable choice.

File size. Meta lists generous limits for Stories ads: up to 30 MB for images and up to 4 GB for videos. Normal Stories rarely come close; a well-exported 60-second clip is usually a few dozen megabytes.

Lifetime. A Story is visible for 24 hours. After that it moves to your private Stories Archive, unless you add it to a Highlight on your profile.

Instagram Story Safe Zones

Instagram draws parts of its interface on top of every Story: your profile picture and name at the top, and the reply bar, stickers and buttons at the bottom. Anything placed there can be covered.

Top: keep roughly the first 250 px (about 14%) free of text and logos.

Bottom: keep roughly the last 340 px free; many designers leave even more if the Story has a link sticker or call to action.

Sides: leave about 65 px on the left and right so text is not cut off on narrower phones.

That leaves a central area of roughly 1080 x 1330 px for headlines, faces and anything people must be able to read. Backgrounds and decorative images can still fill the whole 1080 x 1920 frame.

Tip

Most design apps let you add guides. Place a horizontal guide at 250 px and another at 1580 px, and keep every important element between them.

What Happens If Your Story Is Not 9:16?

Square (1:1) and portrait (4:5) photos are shown in the middle of the screen with a colored background above and below. Instagram picks the color from the image; you can change it with the drawing tool or by adding a background image.

Landscape (16:9) photos and videos appear as a small strip across the middle. You can pinch to zoom so they fill the screen, but the sides will be cropped.

Very tall images taller than 9:16 are cropped at the top and bottom.

If you share a feed post to your Story, Instagram places it on a card automatically. That is expected, and tapping the card takes viewers to the original post.

How Long Can an Instagram Story Be?

Videos: each Story can play for up to 60 seconds. If you upload a longer video, Instagram splits it into consecutive 60-second Stories so viewers can watch them one after another.

Photos: a photo Story is shown for about 5 seconds before moving to the next one. If you need more time, export the image as a short video with the length you want.

How long it stays up: 24 hours from the moment you post it. To keep it on your profile longer, add it to a Highlight.

Shorter usually performs better. Clips of 10 to 20 seconds keep people watching, and a sequence of several short Stories feels faster than one long one.

How to Create a Story in the Right Size

Canva and similar editors: choose the Instagram Story template, or create a custom design of 1080 x 1920 px.

Photoshop, Figma or Illustrator: start a 1080 x 1920 px artboard in RGB color. Export photos as high-quality JPG or PNG in the sRGB color profile.

CapCut, Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve: set the project to 9:16 at 1080 x 1920 and 30 fps, then export as MP4 with H.264 compression.

Your phone camera: shooting a vertical video or photo gives you a 9:16 frame automatically on most phones.

Save a template with your safe-zone guides already in place, so every new Story starts at the correct size.

Why Your Instagram Story Looks Blurry (and How to Fix It)

  1. Upload at the right size.

Export at 1080 x 1920. Smaller files are scaled up and lose sharpness; much larger files are compressed harder.

  2. Turn on high-quality uploads.

In Instagram, go to Settings and privacy → Data usage and media quality and turn on Upload at highest quality.

  3. Avoid re-compressed files.

Files sent through messaging apps are often compressed before you even upload them. Transfer the original file instead.

  4. Check your connection.

On a weak connection, Instagram may upload a lower-quality version. Post on Wi-Fi or a strong mobile signal when quality matters.

  5. Keep text large.

Small text becomes hard to read after compression. Use bold fonts and enough contrast with the background.

Story vs Reel vs Post Size

FormatRecommended sizeAspect ratio
Story1080 x 1920 px9:16
Reel1080 x 1920 px9:16
Feed post (portrait)1080 x 1350 px4:5
Feed post (square)1080 x 1080 px1:1

Stories and Reels share the same vertical frame, so one 1080 x 1920 file can be used for both. Remember that Reels also show captions and buttons at the bottom, so keep the same safe zones.

Instagram Highlight Cover Size

Highlight covers are shown as small circles under your bio, but you upload them as normal Stories. Create the cover at 1080 x 1920 px and place the icon or text inside a central circle of about 1080 x 1080 px; everything outside that circle is cropped away on your profile. Simple icons with strong contrast read best at that small size.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best size for an Instagram Story?

1080 x 1920 pixels with a 9:16 aspect ratio. It fills the screen on almost every phone and avoids black bars or cropping.

What are the Instagram Story dimensions in inches?

Instagram uses pixels, not inches. Design at 1080 x 1920 px; the physical size on screen depends on the phone.

How long can an Instagram Story video be?

Each Story can play for up to 60 seconds. Longer videos are split into several 60-second Stories automatically.

Can I post a horizontal photo to my Story?

Yes. Instagram shows it in the middle of the screen with a background above and below. Pinch to zoom if you want it to fill the frame, but the sides will be cropped.

Why does Instagram crop my Story?

Images that are not 9:16 are resized to fit a vertical screen. Export at 1080 x 1920 and keep important content inside the safe zone to avoid unwanted cropping.

Are Instagram Story and Reel sizes the same?

Yes. Both use 1080 x 1920 px at 9:16, so the same file works for both formats.

Does Instagram compress Stories?

Yes, every upload is compressed. Exporting at 1080 x 1920 and turning on Upload at highest quality keeps the loss to a minimum.
