Comments are limited
New comments from a restricted account on your posts are visible to that account by default. You can choose to view the comment, approve it so other people can see it, delete it or leave it unapproved.
Restrict is an Instagram privacy and moderation feature that quietly limits how one account interacts with you without applying the broader separation of a block. It mainly changes comments, direct messages, read receipts and activity-status visibility.
When you restrict an account, new comments from that account on your posts are normally visible only to that person unless you choose to approve them. Their direct messages are routed to Message Requests, and they cannot see when you have read those restricted messages or when you are active on Instagram.
Restrict on Instagram is designed to limit unwanted interaction without automatically removing access to content the account would otherwise be allowed to view.
Instagram Restrict changes several interaction signals while leaving you in control of whether to view, approve or respond.
New comments from a restricted account on your posts are visible to that account by default. You can choose to view the comment, approve it so other people can see it, delete it or leave it unapproved.
Messages from the restricted account are handled through Message Requests rather than appearing like a normal conversation in your main inbox.
A restricted account cannot see when you are active on Instagram or whether you have read its restricted direct messages.
Restrict is best understood as an interaction filter. It gives you more control over one account's comments and messages without using the stronger access control of blocking.
Restriction focuses on interactions with your account rather than simply changing whether you follow someone.
Restriction filters interactions. Blocking is a broader control intended to prevent access and interaction between accounts.
You can unrestrict the account later if you no longer want those interaction limits applied.
Comment visibility is one of the main effects of restriction.
The restricted account can see its own new comment on your post.
You can review the comment and approve it if you want it to become visible to other people.
You remain able to delete the comment or leave it without approving it.
Restricted conversations are handled differently from ordinary inbox messages.
Instagram routes direct messages from the restricted account to Message Requests.
You can view restricted messages without the restricted account seeing the normal read indication.
The restricted account cannot use Instagram's activity status to see when you are online.
Restrict by itself is not the same as hiding your profile or content. An account can generally continue viewing content it would otherwise have permission to view under your account and content privacy settings.
Your existing account privacy setting still determines who can access private or public profile content.
Story visibility and other audience controls can have separate settings from Restrict.
Restrict and Block both control unwanted interactions, but they do different jobs.
Restrict limits comment visibility, routes messages differently and hides your activity and read status from that account.
Blocking is a stronger access and interaction control than restriction.
The practical distinction is that Restrict manages unwanted interaction while Block is intended for broader separation between accounts.
Instagram can change interface wording, but the account-profile method is straightforward in current app versions.
Go to the Instagram profile of the account you want to restrict.
Use the three-dot menu on the profile.
Select Restrict and follow the confirmation shown by Instagram. Menu wording can vary slightly between app versions.
Instagram does not send the other account a direct notification announcing that you restricted it. Restriction is designed as a quieter moderation control than blocking.
You can return to the account's profile and use the available Unrestrict control. Instagram also provides account-management settings for restricted accounts, although menu placement can change between app versions.
