It is personalized
Instagram tends to show accounts you know first, such as people you follow or interact with. Two people opening the same following list can see different orders.
Instagram does not show when someone followed an account, and other people's following lists are not sorted by date. Here is how the list order really works, what you can see on your own account, and why "recently followed" trackers are a risk.
Not reliably. Instagram has no "recently followed" view for other accounts, shows no follow dates, and orders someone else's following list in a way that is not chronological. The top of their list is not proof of a recent follow.
The only list you can sort by date is your own: open your Following list and choose "Date followed".
The Instagram following order you see on another profile is chosen by Instagram for you as the viewer. It is not a timeline of when the accounts were followed.
Instagram tends to show accounts you know first, such as people you follow or interact with. Two people opening the same following list can see different orders.
Other people's followers and following lists carry no follow dates and no date sort. Instagram does not publish how the order is ranked.
An account at the top of someone's following list may have been followed years ago. Reading the order as recently followed on Instagram leads to wrong conclusions.
The same rules apply to both lists on someone else's profile, with a few details that are easy to misread.
When you open someone's followers or following, accounts you also follow are often grouped near the top. That reflects your connections, not the timing of their follows.
Refreshing the list or opening it on another day can move accounts around. A change in position does not mean anyone followed or unfollowed.
To check whether someone follows a specific account, use the search bar at the top of their following list rather than scrolling and relying on the order.
Your own Instagram recent following list can be sorted by follow date. The steps are the same on iPhone and Android.
Go to your profile and tap the Following count.
Tap the "Sorted by" control near the top of the list.
Pick "Date followed: Latest" to see the accounts you followed most recently, or "Earliest" for the oldest. Wording can vary by app version.
Your Followers list has no date sort, but Instagram still gives you two ways to check recent followers on Instagram.
New followers appear in your notifications (the heart icon), most recent first, as long as follow notifications are turned on.
In Accounts Center, under Your information and permissions, you can download your data. The export lists your followers and following with the date of each follow.
The Instagram unfollowers tracker reads that same export to show who unfollowed you or does not follow you back, without asking for your password.
Without a date in Instagram's data, the only honest method is to notice changes yourself.
If their Following number goes up, they followed someone new. The count does not tell you who.
On a public account, or a private one you follow, you can note names you recognize and check again later. It is slow and imperfect, but it is based on real data.
If the account is private and you are not an approved follower, you cannot see its following list at all, and no legitimate tool can.
Apps and sites that promise Instagram recently followed lists for any account come with real downsides.
Many trackers ask you to sign in with your Instagram account. Handing your password to a third party can lead to a hacked or restricted account.
Automated collection of profile data goes against Instagram's Terms of Use, and accounts linked to these tools can be limited.
Since Instagram provides no follow dates for other accounts, a tracker can only compare snapshots or guess from list order.
Instagram used to have a Following tab in the activity feed that showed likes, comments and new follows from accounts you followed. Instagram removed it in October 2019, saying people were surprised to see their activity shown to others. It has not returned.
They cannot sort your list by date either, but anyone who can open your following list can see who is on it. To control that, read how to hide your following list on Instagram. Instagram also does not reveal who views your profile, as explained in can you see who viewed your Instagram profile, and Story viewer lists follow their own rules, covered in our Story viewer order guide.
